Jose Jerry Belibestre broke through to his first international title winning the Boys Long Jump at SEA Youth Championships over the weekend in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 17 year old from Bacolod leap of 6.93m, although outside his personal best of 7.09m was good enough to clinch the Gold.

It marked the first time in Two decades in which the Philippines have won a gold medal in this event. The Philippines that used to send quite large team to this only sent two athletes this time who both delivered medals. Names such as Lydia De Vega and Elma Muros made their international debuts at the SEA Youth Championships.

Jerry Belibestre international debut was last year at the ASEAN School Games were he won the Silver Medal behind a Thai. The Thai who is two years older than Jerry was not eligible for this meet. Jerry hopes to defend his Palaro title next month in Tagum, and Is also eyeing the 7.26m Palaro Record of Julian Reem Fuentes. Jerry may have to wait his turn to join the training pool as there is already four senior men long jumpers in the lineup.

Meanwhile his school mate Alexis Soqueno who is also from Romansita Maravilla and trains under brother-sister duo Miguel and Adriana Arca also took a silver medal in the 400 Hurdles with a new personal best of 54.50. Soqueno who is better known as a high jumper (he won the National Junior title last month in Laguna) also finished 5th in the High Jump in 1.87m and 6th in 110 Hurdles in 14.95.

The boys were accompanied by Miguel Arca.

My Piglets both did well they proved they worth sending and didn’t waste the opportunity cause they both got medals.
