Fil-Heritage Jumper Tyler Ruiz, 25 made the difficult decision a year ago to transfer from the High Jump to the Long Jump. The 6’2 Tyler who had two unsuccessful campaigns for the Philippines in the SEA Games finishing sixth in 2013 and 2015. Tyler luck changed for the better yesterday at the Aztec Invitational in Sandiego when he recorded a big personal best of 7.78m. The leap had a legit wind reading of +1.2m/s. Only Olympian Henry Dagmil has ever jumped further.

Ruiz performance exceeded the 2015 SEA Games gold medal jump of Supanara of Thailand (7.75m).

Tyler is a graduate of USC with a Cuban Father and Filipino mother. His Cuban Genetics now began to show. Tyler broke the meet record of Kenta Bell (7.77m) set in 2003.  It was a big improvement on his previous best of 7.63m at Chula Vista last year.

Excited. I knew I could jump much further than previous weeks. I was just a little rusty I think. Heading to the National Open tonight. said Ruiz.

Tyler now heads off to the Philippines National Open in Iligan, Isabella. It will be a magnificent final with NCAA Record Holder Julian Reem Fuentes (7.69m), 2015 SEA Games bronze medalist Donovont Arriola (7.64m) and 2015 ASEAN School Games Record Holder Jerry Belibestre (7.47m) seeing action. Only two of these four men will be selected for the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia. NCAA Silver medalist Aristeo Dela Pena (7.44m), 2011 SEA Games bronze medalist Benigno Marayag (7.61m) and Janry Ubas (7.55m).

The last time Ruiz competed at national championships he won the 2014 Philippine National Games High Jump at Ultra.
