0Its Gold for RAFOLS !!!!!!
Day 3 of the ASEAN School Games in Singapore saw Team Philippines get its third gold in Athletics. This time it was 2016 Palarong Pambansa Champion John Marvin Rafols. Rafols was demoted to silver in the 2017 Palaro in Antique. But he smashed his personal best to get the countries third gold with a leap of 15.02m. His previous best of 14.65m where he won his last Palaro title in Legazpi was set last year. He struggled throughout 2017 due to injuries and lost his palaro title in 2017.
But for Rafols from Cebu it was worth the wait. In 2014 and 2015 Palaro Record Holder Martin James Esteban had taken silver in this event. His performance also ranks #7 on the Philippine Junior all time list.
Silver went to Nattaphong Srinrata of Thailand in 14.91m.
Bronze went to Karl Arvin Aquino from Laguna, who had won Gold in the Long Jump on Day 1. Aquino mark of 14.88m improved on his PB of 14.42m Bronze Medal at Palaro.
Giron Impresses
Another impressive story was Edwin Giron Jr. of Philippines who challenged all the way in the 1500 after getting bronze in the 800. And missed out on just .01 seconds from the Gold. Vietnam’s Nguyen Trung Cuong won in 4.01.42, with Giron agonizingly close in 4.01.43. James Orduna of the Philippines took bronze in 4.03.85.
Giron is the Palarong Pambansa champion he knocked 5 second from his 4.06.3 time to 4.01.42 in 3 months. Originally from Zamboanga City but moving to study and train in Dasmarinas last year.
His time is
- #2 this year in 2017 behind Mevin Guarte (3.54)
- Actually ahead of all the other members of the national team in this event.
- #7 All time Juniors for the Philippines in 1500
- Ranked 9th in the 2017 SEA Rankings.
Two more Bronzes
In the 200m Girls 13 year old Bianca Jane Combate the Palaro Champion from Leyte in the 100 Meter Dash took bronze in 25.37 improving on her best time of 25.5 (ht). Janyamitri of Thailand won in 25.07 getting the edge over 400m Champion Hoang Thi Minh Hanh 25.35. Palaro Champion Samantha Limos did not qualify past the heats.
In the 800m Palaro Champion Jie Ann Calis clocked 2.14.96, for bronze at the ASEAN School Games. While far from her Personal best of 2.12.55 set way back in 2015 at the Tagum Palaro. Calis had taken the 1500 Bronze 2 years ago at thse Games in Brunei 2 years ago. And ended her last appearance at the ASG with another medal. Vietnam took gold and silver in 2.13.85 and 2.14.36.
In the 200m Boys Siripol Punpa of Thailand won in 21.58. Missing out on the meet record of Badrul Hisyam Manap of Malaysia 21.39 (2015). Punpa, 18 ran his PB of 21.18 to win the Thailand Open last month, where he took the scalp of 2016 Asian Junior 100 Champion Khairul Jantan of Malaysia in that race.
