Eric Cray Takes Third SEA Games Title

Cray and Quach both diving for SEA Games glory

Newly Crowned Asian Champion Eric Shauwn Cray of the Philippines in his third race of Day 1, won his 4th ever SEA Games Gold Medal. Cray made it his third straight SEA Games title in the 400 Hurdles. He added the second gold for Athletics after Mary Joy Tabal win in the Marathon.

Moving out fast in lane 6 Cray, was leading the group coming into the last bend, with team mate Francis Medina out slow and having to work extra hard to catch the first group including Quach Cong Lich of Vietnam. Cray surged at 150 but the group followed closely behind. Medina started to pass 2013 SEA Games silver medallist Andrian of Indonesia down the home straight. But he fell over the last Hurdle possibly landing on his previously injured leg putting himself out of the race and was taken away in tears in a wheel chair. Meanwhile Quach was making a big move and rapidly closing in on Eric Cray. Whether it was due to triyng to conserve for the energy of the 100 Final later that evening, Quach closed a big margin on Cray. Cray had to dive to marginally hold off Quach but the camera had to decide the blanket Finish.

When the dust settled Eric Cray had defended his SEA Games title by the narrowest of Margins 50.03 to 50.05. The look of shock and disblief on the Big Viet Quach face was obvious. As he could just not believe that Eric Cray had burgled the blanket finish from him, and had to settle for the silver another year in a row. Andrian of Indonesia took Bronze in 51.52.
