PSC Plans to Scrap Batang Pinoy Next Year, Is this Good for the Country?

While It came to my attention few weeks from a tip-off that the PSC was planning to scrap

the Batang Pinoy. So I found this hard to believe but was advised to not post anything until

information became available after October 3.

Consequently, no further information was provided. So after 10 days it now safe to post,

while in the future this grace period seems a bit too long. So Now I read in Balita that the

plans to Scrap Batang Pinoy next year will push through.

My sources told me weeks ago a meeting was held between PSC and DEPED. That the fund

for BP will be diverted to coaches’ technical training and education. While the PSC also feels

that BP is just a duplication of Palaro. Hence nothing is cast in stone, but this could be the

last staging of the BP.

Now it seems like it will be based on the recent quote from Balita.

In my own opinion, I do not think the Batang Pinoy is similar or intended to be too similar to

the Palarong Pambansa. I’m not saying the Batang Pinoy instead of Palaro. But both are

equally beneficial.

  1. From 2011-2015 the Batang Pinoy saw exponential growth showing it was a Successful Program.
    1. 2011 2250 participants
    2. 2012 4397 participants (195% increase)
    3. 2013 7546 participants (171% increase)
  2. The Batang Pinoy is supposed to be for kids 13-15 to prepare them for the Palarong Pambansa which is 13-18. The PSC admin changed the age limit to 13-17 in 2016 which in turn made it more similar to the age range at the Palaro. Is a 13-year-old physically able to compete with an 18-year-old?
  3. There were a lot more clinics and seminars available for anyone to join. Whereas with the DEPED usually teachers are front lined or prioritized in these clinics and seminars at Palaro.
  4. Sports not played at the Palaro were available at Batang Pinoy. All of the below except Dance Sport, Rugby, and Pencak Silat are Olympic Sports. However, 7s Rugby and Pencat are played frequently at SEA Games. So its important we also give these sports the chance to become part of our national syllabus of events.
    1. Weight Lifting
    2. DanceSport instead of Gymnastics
    3. Karatedo
    4. Pencat Silat
    5. Cycling
    6. Judo
    7. Rugby
    8. Triathlon
    9. Wrestling
  5. Anyone can Join the Batang Pinoy even kids who are ‘Homeschooled’ or not going to school.
  6. Palaro is a school knock out competition where only 2 athletes per region can represent each event and teams are limited to 12 in elementary or 15 in secondary per region. In some regions, the top 3 in an event may come from that event. So it encourages more participation and bigger numbers at Batang Pinoy
  7. The power was put in the hands of the LGU for selection. With athletes representing the LGU, they come from. Giving more pride to local sports. A lot of the time athletes from provinces end up competing for NCR or Calabarzon who come from Mindanao. But in Batang Pinoy, they compete for their home LGU from which they originally come from.

I could go on all day about the benefits and opportunities this program brings to Philippine

Sport having frequently been invited as a Researcher and Analyst for this said event during

my stint with the Philippine Sports PSC (Philippine Sports). In the sense, it engages learning

and knowledge sharing in a more sports carnival-like atmosphere.

Better to get Rid of Milo

To Chairman Ramirez,

What doesn’t make any sense is removing an event such as Batang Pinoy which has high

attendance and more room for growth. Palaro has a lot of attendance also. However, we do

have 3 multi-events targetted for kids. Palaro, Batang Pinoy, and Milo. And if you include the

Children’s Games there is now 4.

The event that is the weakest link here is the Milo Little Olympics. Which is now nothing

more than a glorified exhibition/ barangay games. Numbers are dwindling. In Mindanao

Cagayan De Oro always insists on hosting this event despite providing a substandard track

oval which has no rubber surface. Despite there being an 8 lane standard rubberized track

oval at Xavier University 10 minutes away. The organizer hasn’t taken the initiative to use the

better facility.

Milo this year due to the Marawi incident made many teams stay clear of Milo event and saw

numbers plummet. If Milo is to survive in Mindanao other cities must be given the

opportunities to host. It’s not fair the Cagayan De Oro always hosts the event when other

places are willing to.

Suggestions

  1. Milo should be removed if one children’s meet has to go
  2. Batang Pinoy should go back to 15 and below age grade to make it less similar to Palaro and to reduce numbers making it easier to manage
  3. The Children’s Games and Batang Pinoy can be merged and incorporated to make it more manageable and benefit more kids.
