Arguably one of the nicest guys in Philippine Track and Field. And the quintessential boy
next door Anfernee Lopena finally became the Philippine National Champion in the
prestigious 100m Dash in the 2017 National Open at Ilagan.
Originating from Bohol, became the Palaro Champion in the 400m at Dapitan in 2011. He
was first at the University of Recoletos in Cebu which later closed down. Recommended by
pinoyathletics to CSB. For most of his career, he was coached by Joseph Sy who took him
from 11.3 to 10.47et in the 100m over the 4 years he had worked with him.
Lopena who had missed out on the 2013 and 2015 SEA Games, was given his shot in 2017 in
the 4×100 and possibly the 100m. He ran the 100 at the Asian Champs and made the Semi-
Finals.
He was part of the 4×100 Squads which lowered the National Record to 40.29 at Ilagan,
39.96 in Hong Kong and 39.11 at SEA Games. Consequently, he won a Bronze Medal at the
2017 SEA Games in the 4×100.
Also, Lopena timed 10.70 and finished 9th just missing out on the SEA Games
Finals in the 100m event.

Philippines NCAA: Anfernee Lopena regains 100m title Anfernee Lopena

Anfernee Lopena (College of Saint Benilde) playing his final year in the NCAA. Regained
the 100m title in the Mens 100m and in the process the NCAA record. Anfernee Lopena, 23
who hails from Bohol has a personal best of 10.47 set during the weekly relays last year.
After clocking 10.64 in the heats. Anfernee Lopena stormed to a victory of 10.70 in the 100m
Finals. Winning over Rodquem Maullon (Arellano) 10.86, and Fernan Lopez (Mapua).
*Lopena time of 10.64 in the heats, exceeds Udtohan 10.66 heats from last year, but its awaiting wind reading for ratification.
This came at the expense of defending champion Jomar Udtohan (San Sebastian) .Who was forced to withdraw from
these games with an injury to focus on getting ready for the National Open in Isabella later this month.
Both Lopena and Udtohan are members of the national training pool.
Lopena who a few years back was struggling to find a school after his school in Cebu disband their funding for the athletic
teams. He came to Manila with a PB of 11.6 only. While working with Joseph Sy this time became a distant memory.
The end of a beautiful Chapter came when Lopena. Also regained the double winning the 200 Meters aswell. He won
over Russell Galleon (Letran), 2015 Silver medallist in the 400 and 800 at the Palaro.
Lopena also placed third in the 400m behind Francis Medina (Perpetual), and Galleon.
Lopena hopes to make the standard for the SEA Games in 2017 which is 10.47 for the
bronze. He will next compete at the national championships in Isabella. Lopena has never
been national champion perhaps another achievement to tick off the bucket list one day.
