Day Two #DavNorPalaro2015 Round-up; Gilbert Rutaquio defends his Palaro Title
ANDREW PIRIE - Pinoyathletics.info Editor and ATFS Statistician
In what can be described as quite a rather quiet day in Athletics. Gilbert Rutaquio of STCAA successfully defended his 3000 m Steeple Chase title in 9:50.0 from McLord Cabalonga (Region II) and Rodnie Antiquena (WV). It was a bit faster for Rutaquio whose winning time in this event last year was 10.04.6. Rutaquio won a bronze medal for the Philippines in the 800 meter Dash at the ASEAN School Games last year and will be in the final of that event tomorrow. A graduating student at Emilio Aguinaldo High school at Cavite he is coached by Fernando Dagasgas. Rutaquio is still deciding on which college he will be attending but plans to continue on his love of running for many years to come.
NCR’s Daniel Daynaata who was fifth in this event last year won the Girls Discus in 32.07m, very far from the 40.25m meet record established by Maika De Oro of WV 4 years ago. Daynaata was the only finalist from last year left in this event and she beat Bugati (CAR) and team mate Artienda in this event.
Kenneth Rafanan (STCAA) who won the Discus last year at this event, swapped his title for the Shotput Gold. Rafanan ended up a disappointing fourth in the Discus yesterday. His winning throw was 14.68m outside the 15.32m record of Bryan Pachecho last year. He edged out John Edric Manalang (NCR) 14.18m and Batang Pinoy champion Tyrone Flores (STCAA) 13.40m.

National Junior Record Holder Karen Janario took the 100 Hurdles title. Arms in the air the time was not important as this was the first time Karen had won the 100 title last year after finishing third last year with the gold going to LSA team mate Melissa Escoton. Not known for her fast starts, Janario soon got into the flow of putting her opponents behind her the last 30 meters of the race.
Running in spikes 1 size too small, Karen settled with 15.24, far from her 14.52 National Junior Record with Pamela Marquillero and Ezel Divingracia in second 15.64 and third 15.85.
Janario is already lined up for the 2015 ASEAN School Games due to her National Junior Record last year where she finished second by a hairline 14.51 to 14.52 against a Malaysian who now is too old for the meet. The qualification for t he world youth championships is 14.35.

Vergel prevents ha-trick for Soqueno
After serving as the bridesmaid for Jaime Mejia the last two years, Alvin Vergel (NCR) coached by Jeoffrey Chua won the Palaro 110 Hurdles title in 14.68. Narrowly holding off 400 Hurdles Champion Alexis Soqueno (WV) who clocked 14.74. Vergel prevented Soqueno from a triple gold medal feat. The Performance was a big improvement on his personal best for Vergel. It was just outside the ASEAN Schools qualifier of 14.60. However the height of the hurdles was fixed at 1.00m due to the design and not the standard .991m used for juniors at the Palaro. Mens height is 1.067m.
Soqueno however bounced back breaking his 1.92m meet record he set last year in Laguna, with a 1.95m effort. Just outside his 1.96m PB. Soqueno needs to leap 2.00m to qualify for ASEAN School Games.

Kaylene Mosqueda of Iloilo defended her palaro title with a 1.60m effort. She then raised the bar to 1.65m which would have tied her winning performance at the WV Regional Palaro. But she failed on all 3 attempts. The Palaro Record is held by Maureen Emily Schrijvers at 1.62m. It questions why a leap of 1.63m was not attempted first to ensure a new record was established.

Kenneth Nodos clocked a personal best of 49.66 to win the Boys 400m. It was Nodos first time below 50 seconds. Controlling the pace the first 200 Nodos quickly settled into his rhythm but being closely pursued by Galleon of Zamboanga. Not looking back with Galleon closing in, Nodos rang strong through the line to claim the Palaro Gold. Galleon also went under 50 seconds with a time of 49.97. Nodos still has a bit of work to do to hit the ASEAN School qualifier of 48.98.

Meanwhile ‘The happiest girl in the Palaro’ Leyte’s Feiza Lenton crossed the line with a big smile taking a whole second off her PB with a 58.66 run in the girls 400m. Her rival Anjelica De Josef of Aklan fell behind at 130m but stuck on Feiza trying to close the gap but running out of rope. De Josef also clocked a PB of 58.71. Jessel Lumapas of Cavite took the bronze.
Top two make things interesting for ASEAN School 5000m Run
McLord Cabalonga (CARAA) last years silver medalist, took the Palaro title in the boys 5000m in 15.45.69, with Earl Casinabe of Region X taking second in 15:45.86. The top two performers each earnt one tick for the ASEAN School Games.
The top two performers in the 5000m Run caused a reshuffle for National Junior Champion Kevin Capangpangan of UST who had the best time of 16.06. Below the rather slow 16:24 gold medal at the last ASEAN School Games Capanganan has a PB of 15:45 but this was done outside of the qualification period so he must be in the top 2 by the end of the qualification period.

An up and down 2015 Palaro for Gilbert Rutaquio who secured a very narrow margin of victory in the Boys 1500m. Rutaquio who won the Steeplechase before finishing dead last. But for the gutsy boy from EAC High school coached by Fernando Dagagas the experience of dog fighting was nothing new when he came back from the ASEAN Schools in the last 100m 50m behind from 5th and turned it into a bronze medal. Rutaquio threw himself over the line and won in 4:10.22 from Rodnie Antiquena 4.10.38 and Lloyd Prado 4.10.45.

Alexis Soqueno of Bacolod better known as a high jumper but this year has shown huge improvements over the 400 Hurdles took the Palaro title with a 55.03 effort. He bested Marjun Sulleza (Region 12) and Rabbi Sulleza (Region 10).
Research revealed that Soqueno performance last month at the SEA Youth Championships is good enough for him to qualify for the World Youth Championships in Colombia end of July. His performance for silver at the SEA Youth Championships of 54.54s (.838m), below the criteria set by the IAAF of 55.00s (.838m).
“My glutes hurt a bit after that run.” said the bubbly teenager who immediately started using his home made foam roller after his event.
ASEAN School Games Qualification gets interesting

The results of the girls 400 Hurdles changed things up a bit for ASEAN School Games 2015 in Brunei qualification.
In the Girls 400 Hurdles, things got very interesting with Ezel Divingracia of Iloilo, 16 winning in 1:04.83. Divingracia who was fully focused and confident in the blocks took the lead early and never conceded a bit coming several strides clear of nearest pursuer when the runners tidied up the stagger the last 100 meters. Divingracia who missed out on a medal finishing fourth last year took her first palaro secondary title.
Coming in second was last years elementary champion and the event favorite Ellah Therese Sirilan of NCR, 14 in a time of 1:05.82. Sirilan who is participating in her first year in the secondary division seemed nervous and unsettled during the start of the event. Sirilan last month took the National Junior title in Laguna clocked 1:04.50.
Bernalyn Bejoy of Bacolod, the training partner of Alexis Soqueno took the bronze in 1:06.05.

The three athletes under the bronze mark (1:05.54). The third athlete being Uni Games Champion Josefina Baloloy of RTU who is in her last year of eligibility for this meet being born in 1997. Baloloy earned the silver in the 400 Hurdles last year at the ASEAN School Games in Marikina after coming out of the hospital from dehydration with a time of 1.05.48.
Baloloy whose best time is 1:03.5 but outside the qualification period which began December 2014 so will have to improve her time at the PSC-POC NCR National Games Leg on July 2-6. The Philippine Team for ASEAN School Games is open to athletes who are at high school or college in the Philippines, but must be born in 1997 or after. Only 2 athletes maximum is allowed per event.
Javelin Record falsely reported now amended by DEPED
ASEAN School Games Champion Joshua Patulud (NCR) won the Javelin with a throw of 57.96m (700 grams). The meet organizers had mistakenly reported this as a meet record, however after consultation with the DEPED the meet records have now been amended. They are still Bryan Jay Pachecho (CLRAA) 62.47m (700g), 2014 and Allanloid Lumbao (IRAA) 59.18m (800g). Patulud beat Ronald Lacson (WV) and Mark Manipon (IRAA).
100M Times Lack Lustre
Due to strong headwinds, the Boys and Girls 100-meter times were a lot slower than expected.
Unlikely Palaro 2014 in Laguna which was dominated by Jomar Udtohan (NCR) there was no clear favorite with just less than .10 seconds separating the first four qualifiers to the final leading up to a highly anticipated event.
The Boys 100m was won by surprise winner Iran Manjares from Mindoro. Manjares was quickest out of the blocks. However, at the halfway mark the big rolling form of the 6’0 Ervin Carter from Iloilo took a slight lead. Manjares who continued to hurl his body forward just nipped Carter on the line 11.44 to 11.46, NCAA Junior Champion Ezra Gonzales (STCAA) clung onto bronze with 11.55.
Karen Janario leads the Guro in the girls 100 Meter Dash

It was a rather cumbersome start for Batang Pinoy champion Karen Janario of Leyte. Falling four strides behind the rest of the field at the 60 meters. The expected favorite looked out of the race. However, the last burst saw her edge out Iloilo Elrica Ann Guro 12.75 to 12.99. Janario PB is 12.44 from the ASEAN School Games last year.
Her coach Trece Academia was considering letting her run the 400m instead but opted to let her have a go at winning the 100m title. Janario was the bronze medalist in this event last year. Palaro Long Jump champion and training partner Rosemarie Olorvida took the bronze in 13.02. Olorvida and Janario were part of the National Junior record-breaking team at the ASEAN School Games last year which took the bronze.
800M Boys Two athletes considered for ASEAN School Games

The top two athletes put their names under consideration for the 2015 ASEAN School Games Maverick Matchino (STCAA) and Russell Galleon (Region 9) 1.56.98 and 1.57.01 respectively eclipsing the silver mark. It was a tightly fought and interesting 800m race with the group breaking away from ASEAN School Games Bronze medalist Gilbert Rutaquio. Still fatigued from last nights steeplechase win Rutaquio faded to dead last. It was a strong finish with the top four finishing below 1:58 and the 1:58.7 bronze standard for the ASEAN School Games.
Misamis’ Pride Calis Armageddon Palaro 800m
TAGUM CITY, DAVAO DE NORTE. Northern Mindanao Athletic Association (NMRAA) stand-out Jie Ann Calis was the woman of the hour as she shatters existing meet record. during the 2015 Palarong Pambansa here at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex, Davao City, Davao del Norte on 06-May. Calis who clocked 2:12.27 positioned herself as one of the rising stars in Philippine Athletics.
By: Prof. Airnel Talatala Abarra, MSc. Chief Correspondent and Andrew Pirie- Statistician of www.pinoyathletics.com
Trouncing rivals Feiza Lenton of Eastern Visayas who set a run of Jie Ann able to trick Western Visayas previous record holder Anjelica Josef (2.17.2). By allowing the latter to gain some advantage on the first 200m of the last lap. Surprising her rivals, Calis able to turbocharge on the last 100m stunning Western Visayas’ pride Josef. who in the nick of time landed instead at 3rd with such disappointment. Surprisingly, Lenton’s which is 2:14.47 and Josef’s 2:14.49 marks as one of the best performances in Palaro History as top three places did a clean slate in existing records in one meet.
Calis
Jieann hails from Plaridel, Misamis Occidental is a perennial favorite for the next edition of ASEAN school games. The Misamis wave will be a force in the Palaro for many years to come as amazingly she is only a Grade 9 ‘3rd’ year student and due to the new K-12 curriculum may not graduate till around 2018.
Jieann Time also meets the 800m standard for the world youth championships in Colombia in July. The qualifying time is 2:14.00 set by the IAAF.
In the heats of the 800m Calis took the first heat in 2:14.0 and Anjelica De Josef the second heat in 2:13.9. De Josef had also achieved the standard for the world youth championships in the 800m heats.
For the ASEAN School games, though as only two athletes will be selected Jieann Calis 2.12.27, Louielyn Pamatian (UST) 2.13.97. And Anjelica De Josef 2.13.9 are the top 3. With Calis and Pamatian in the qualifying spots. In order to qualify one of the other two athletes must opt out or Anjelica must be placed in the top two by July.
