Philippine Judo Federation president Dave Carter said Phoenix president and chief executive officer Dennis Uy has agreed to become the chairman of the federation where he will support the four national athletes through the Siklab Atleta Pilipinas Sports Foundation.
The four athletes are Southeast Asian Games gold medalists Kiyomi Watanabe and Mariya Takahashi, Sugen Nakano, and Kessei Nakano. The Fil-Japanese judokas are training in Japan.
Carter said Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez initiated the move to have Uy, who is also the presidential adviser for sports, on board even before the formal launching of the foundation recently.
“We are very thankful with the kind of support that we are getting. It’s overwhelming,” said Carter during the Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Olympic Committee Media Group sports chat.
The four judokas are part of the 29 athletes identified by Sikab Atleta Pilipinas Foundation to be financed through the help of private funds in its bid to produce the country’s first gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Popular Judo President David Carter Re-elected
MANILA, Philippines — David Carter was re-elected for a fresh term as Philippine Judo
Federation president during the federation’s recent elections.
Carter, who first took over in 2006-07 and was reinstalled to the top post in subsequent
voting in 2008 and 2012, was given another mandate by 74 clubs representing Davao, NCR,
Visayas and Southern Tagalog during the PJF polls. His latest term will end in 2020.
Also elected were Vicente Fernandez (EVP), Luleo Panganiban (general secretary), Lyn
Versoza (general treasurer), Rochelle Baclagan (referees director), CJ Lariosa (Sports
director), Irene Divina (education, coach, Kata director), Jane Lapuz (marketing director) and
Brian Jay Llamas (auditor).
“Our missions are to get at least five golds in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and send two
Olympians (to the 2020 Games) while praying we get at least a medal in Tokyo,” said Carter.
To get the ball rolling, Carter said the federation is planning to form “a stronger coaching
staff before the end of March and a stronger national team line-up by April and May.”
The PJF elections were supposed to be conducted in 2016 but according to Carter, was
delayed “due to SEA Games preparations, etc.” Voting, he said, was witnessed by the
Philippine Olympic Committee, which sent Robert Mananquil as observer.

Philippine Judo Team 2 medals in HK Meet
22 year old Monica Pineda bagged the silver while Helen Dawa took the bronze in their respective categories as the Philippines held its own against a crack international field in the Hong Kong International judo tournament at the Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Center in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon recently.
Pineda finished second in the under-45kg while Dawa placed third in under-48kg division of the event that drew participants from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
This is a good selection of different nations at a high degree of competition but i will await the final results for further analysis to see if they were up against any SEA Games medalists.
Pineda who is a student at the University of the East is a newcomer and did not participate in the nine athlete contingent that played in the 2011 SEA Games. She is not currently in the current training pool of Judo. But this is a notable performance from Pineda.
The 11-member Phl delegation, backed by PLDT-Hong Kong Ltd., was headed by team manager Shalimar Tamano and included seven national judokas and three young athletes from La Salle Greenhills.
The athletes included SEA Games medalists Bryn Quillotes (bronze), Jenielou Mosqueda (silver), Gilbert Ramirez (gold), Helen Dawa (silver)
and also newcomers Monica Pineda, Miguel Teruel, Francis Recio, Alvin Mendoza, Shaun Roxas and Joaquin Miciano.
Last SEA Games Myanmar the Philippines won 2 Golds, 3 Silvers and 2 Bronzes.
As of now the SEA Games 2015 only contains the lightest category of 52kg in Judo. Which means unless amendments are made to the event lists Pineda (45kg) and Dawa (48kg) would have to bulk up or compete against bigger athletes.
