Karatedo does well due to Government Intervention 12 Golds in Indonesian Open

Apr 29, 2018

With the PSC taking care-taker responsibility of training and competitions of National athletes in Karatedo. The National team delivered 12 Golds at the Indonesian International Open.

Please note the SEA Championships in Karatedo were the week before. And the Philippines did not attend. So this meet was not as strong as it was made out to be. It did have some former SEA Games medallists and juniors. Pinoyathletics apologises for any confusion caused.

PSC Suspends Funding on Philippine Karatedo Investigating Missing Athlete

Allowances

Published

By Waylon Galvez (Manila Bulletin)

While the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) conducts an investigation over alleged

corruption within the Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF), the Philippine Sports

Commission (PSC) said yesterday that financial assistance to the association will temporarily

be stopped.

But Ramirez made it clear that members of the national team would continue to get their

monthly allowances.

“Effective today we are suspending all the funding of the PKF,” said Ramirez in a

press conference held at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

Aside from suspending funding to the association, the government sports agency likewise

ordered PKF official and karatedo coaches not to communicate to any of the athletes.

“We are also instructing the executive director (Sannah Frivaldo) or the building

administrator to restrict any PKF officials to talk or to be near the athletes during the

investigation,” said Ramirez.

“We are not suspending the allowances of the athletes,” Ramirez said.

Early this week, the PSC requested the help of the NBI to look into allegations of several

members of the national karatedo team that they did not receive in full the money they were

supposed to get during a training camp in Germany from July 20 to August 9, 2017.

It was PSC commissioner Ramon Fernandez who divulged the irregularities following

complaints he said he received from members of the national team that went to Germany.

According to reports, the PSC approved a budget of P3,217,874.75 for the said training camp

of 15-man karatedo team led by PKF secretary-general Raymond Lee Reyes and Iranian

coach Ali Parvinfar.

Under the approved PSC budget, athletes were supposed to get US$90, or a total of $1,800.

Fernandez revealed that the athletes allegedly got only $470 but Reyes countered that

portions of the $1,800 were used for food, board and lodging and other expenses.

PSC uncovers ‘anomaly’ in karate

“anomaly” in the players’ allowances. (SunStar File)

THE Philippine Karatedo Federation (PKF) is in hot water after an alleged anomaly in the

training camp allowances of its athletes for the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG).

After receiving a tip, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Ramon Fernandez

discovered that the karatekas were shortchanged in their allowances during their 20-day

training camp from July 20 to Aug. 8 in Germany in preparation for the SEAG in Kuala

Lumpur, Malaysia.

“The PSC gave them $1,800 (each) for their 20-day training in Germany prior to the

SEA Games, (but only) €400 was given and they were made to sign for $1,800,”

Fernandez told SunStar Cebu. “I was able to get their expose. Six of them signed it,

including (OJ) James Delos Santos, from Cebu.”

The PSC approved the financial assistance for the Philippine National Karatedo squad, also

known as the Philippine Typhoons, last July for a total of P3,217,874.75 for the Germany

training camp.

The 12 athletes were supposed to receive an allowance of $1,800 each or roughly around

P90,800 for the 20-day camp. However, the karatekas only received a total of €400 or around

$470 instead of $1,800.

Fernandez wants to get to the bottom of this and to make the perpetrators answer for this

anomaly.

“We are readying a complaint to be given to the NBI and VACC for investigation

and filing of a case in the DOJ,” he said. “Athletes are now starting to open up to

me, I just got the records from accounting, and voila!”

The Philippine Typhoons bagged three silvers and four bronzes in the SEAG. (EKA)

Zamboanga City karatekas dominate PNG Mindanao meet

Article by Bong Pedralvez

Sept 10, 2015

PAGADIAN – Underscoring its status as a regional sports powerhouse, Zamboanga City

turned the karatedo competitions into a gold mine on the penultimate of the POC-PSC

Philippine National Games Mindanao eliminations here on Sunday.

The Gaisano mall activity center was like a virtual playground for the Zamboanga City

karatekas, who captured 17 golds out of the 42 at stake on top of two silvers and one bronze

medal in the meet organized by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports

Commission.

Among their champions were Estiffen Angeles, Paul Merjun Tomboc, Jimmy Galez III and

Robert Dave Cagot, who topped the men’s 18 to 29-year-old -55, -60, -67 and -75-kilogram

divisions in kumite (sparring), respectively.

They were also dominant in the women’s kumite, with Heidi Chloe Angeles topping the

women’s 18-29 -50-kg. division and Mary Joy Rebollos garnering the gold medal in the -55-

kg. weight class in the sportsfest supported by the Zamboanga del Sur provincial government

led by Gov. Antonio Cerilles.

“Kung pinakyaw natin ang gold sa Asian weightlifting championships, dito pa kaya

sa PNG Mindanao elims,” said Philippine Weightlifting Association vice president

Elbert Atilano here in jest, referring to the success of Zambonga City lifters Hidylin

Diaz and Nestor Colonia in the continental meet.

Mentored by Atilano, who is here to support the Zamboanga City contingent led by his wife

and city sports director Cecile Atilano, Diaz and Colonia combined for a sterling haul of five

golds and one silver medal in last week’s Asian tilt held in Phuket, Thailand.

Cagayan de Oro finished a distant second in the overall karatedo medal standings with six

gold medals, five of them in the kata event, including victories by the Rene Ricardo Donaire

in the men’s 18-year-old and above division and Marc Ian Naguita in the boys 15-17

intermediate class.

Tagum City, Davao del Norte, which held the Palarong Pambansa nationals last May,

stamped its class in taekwondo, picking six golds medals, led by finweight Rohaine Lapiz

and welterweight Czarish Tamayo, who ruled their respective weight divisions in the senior

girls division.

Iligan City also garnered six golds while General Santos City had five, including four in the

boys poomsae competition.

The gold, silver and two bronze medalists in both karatedo and taekwondo qualify for the

POC-PSC PNG finals in April next year.

In softball, SCUAA champion Rizal Technological University dumped Mampang,

Zamboanga City , 5-1, to annex the men’s crown while the team of Tacurong, Sultan

Kudarat blanked Josefina, Zamboanga del Sur, 7-0, in a conceded game to capture the

women’s championship.

Davao City’s Mar Ranao, the reigning UAAP men’s champion, conquered Zamboanga City’s

Ian Jasper Chiong, 21-17, 21-13, to clinch the PNG Mindanao eliminations badminton men’s

Open singles title.

PRISAA women’s champion Pia Lynne Fabros of Metro Kidapawan subdued teammate

Irene Mae Saquian, 21-6, 21-11, in copping the women’s Open singles championship.

Metro Kidapawan’s Oliver Lasaca and Neil Ven Ybanez vanquished the Zamboanga City

pair of Neovanyl Arana and Edcel Dasok, 21-14, 21-19, in annexing the men’s doubles Open

gold.

But Fabros and Karen Mae Montilla, the women’s UAAP titlist, rallied from a first-set deficit

before overcoming upset-conscious teammates Elaine Gamboa and Clara Mae Tolosa, 12-21,

21-14, 21-14.
