By: Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star)
MANILA, Philippines - Laguna has been awarded the hosting of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa after convincing the game’s executive committee of its capability to stage the annual multisports competition for student athletes.
“Laguna will host next year’s Palarong Pambansa,” Department of Education Assistant Secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs Tonisito Umali announced yesterday.
The province’s hosting was granted during last Thursday’s meeting of officials from the DepEd and partner Philippine Sports Commission, headed by Education Secretary Armin Luistro and Umali and PSC commissioner Jolly Gomez.
Also present were Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito with Laguna Provincial Sports head Albert Abarquez and representatives of Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman, whose LGU also bidded for the Palaro.
Marikina, according to Gomez, was tapped as host of another major student joust set in 2014, the sixth ASEAN Schools Games in December of that year.
Laguna’s modern sports facilities – the Laguna Recreational, Education, Cultural and Sports Stadium plus a 70-meter world-class archery range, track oval, football field, and dorm – won it for the province.
Expecting over 2,000 elementary and high school students, the 2014 Palaro will feature three new demo sports in wushu, wrestling and billiards.
Marikina, meanwhile, will play host to some 1,500 student athletes from 11 nations for the Asean schools meet.

Laguna has won the bidding for the hosting of the 2014 Palarong Pambansa, the 57th edition of the national student games, as the game’s executive committee awarded the province to stage the biggest annual sports event.
Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro and Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali announced the hosting in a meeting on Thursday at the Department of Education central office in Pasig City. Present during the announcement were Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito, Laguna Sports Coordinator Albert Abarquez and Marikina City Mayor Del de Guzman, whose city also bidded for the Palaro. The partner agency Philippine Sports Commission was represented by commissioner Jolly Gomez.
Marikina, according to Gomez, will host another major student meet, the sixth ASEAN Schools Games in December 2014.
Laguna’s modern sports facilities including the Laguna Recreational, Education, Cultural and Sports Stadium and a 70-meter world-class archery range, and the newly built track oval, football field, and dorm was the advantage of the province in winning it over the other bidders.
Some 2,000 elementary and high school students are expected to compete in the 2014 Palaro which will include three new demonstration sports in wushu, wrestling and billiards.
Marikina, on the other hand, will host to some 1,500 student athletes from 11 nations for the Asean schools meet.
This will be the first time that Laguna will host the Palarong Pambansa after failing several times to bring the national games to the province in the past 10 years. Laguna has a track record of hosting several Southern Luzon legs of the Batang Pinoy.
Laguna previously lost to Tubod, Iloilo City, Naga City, Koronadal City, Puerto Princesa City, Tacloban City, San Jose in Tarlac, Dapitan City, Lingayen and Dumaguete City in the Palaro hosting rights.
This time its Laguna’s turn to beat Region 4A’s Batangas City, Region 4B’s Puerto Princesa City and Mindoro province, and Marikina City of the National Capital Region.

NCR’s Udtohan Does Grand Slam Record Break in Palaro Sprints
May 9, 2014
17 year old Jomar Udtohan running for NCR did a fantastic job tidying up all three of the sprint records at the Palarong Pambansa. Udtohan is coached by Gando at San Sebastian College. The young Udtohan cruised through the heats in11 flat in the 100m, before destroying a field comprised of the best high schoolers the country had to offer in the Mens 100m Final.
Pushing out hard at the start, Udtohan made up 2m on the whole field after just 50m into the race. Udtohan who was clearly more muscle bound than his opponents who stands 5’5 unleashed a devastating second race portion which saw him surge another 3m on the field to win by 6 strides over Bautista.
Udtohan time of 10.8 seconds broke a Palaro Record that had been shared by four athletes at 10.9 seconds Julio Bayaban (1979), Ronald Calaunan (1998), Emmaneul De Ocampo (2006), and Daniel Noval (2010). Bayaban went onto become the junior record holder in the 100 and 200 at the time which has now been eclipsed. Daniel Noval from Cebu is the current 100m Junior Record Holder which he established 10.65et in 2012. (after checking the official results from previous years the palaro records seem to overlook several of these former record holders).
Surprisingly this was not Udtohan best effort as he had ran an electronically timed 10.88 to break the NCAA Record (equivalent of 10.6 hand timed).
Nevertheless Udtohan didn’t waste any time go under the Palaro Record in the heats of the 200m with a time of 22.0. In the final Udtohan. The final will be tomorrow.

His win was at the expense of team mate Jaime Mejia who was the favorite to win this event and had presented better ability over the 400m the last few years.

Rise of the Champions: Palaro 2014 MVP’s
May 12, 2014
Palaro 2014 is over. Still it would be great to savor and recognize the top performer in the annual centerpiece sport event for basic education students. Ten Palaro records had been broken by the athletes this year and based on this, Pinoyathletics selected the Most Valuable Players in the Athletics Tournament:
Best Thrower:
Bryan Pacheco of Central Luzon Athletic Association (CLRAA) set the pace in breaking records as he erased records in Javelin Throw and Shot-put. A product of Baler, Aurora Province, the senior thrower said that he is more into Javelin and the record break in Shot Put is not expected. Pacheco plans to study in Far Eastern University and his all set for a fruitful UAAP Career in the years to come.
Best Male Sprinter:
No doubt its Jomar Udtohan of NCRAA as he did a grand slam record break in all sprint events (100, 200, and 400m) and also towed his team in smashing records in 4x100m and 4x400m. The San Sebastian College stand-out already broke junior records and we look forward on his stellar performance in ASEAN School Games this December.
Best Female Sprinter
We must say its a tie between Mary Anthony Diesto and Leah Joan Creer. Diesto won the 100m and Long Jump while Creer won the 200m and 400m. As both of them will be possibly school mates in De La Salle University-Manila next school year so that will be a time when there will be distinction in their performance.
Best Middle and Long Distance Runner
Northern Mindanao Region’s Kevin Capangpangan did a stellar performance in the middle and long distance races. Aside from breaking the 1,500m record, he also won the 5,000m in the same palaro. Joining him on our favorites is her teammate, Jie Ann Calis who also won 1,500m and 3,000 which is enough to make NMRAA challenge other powerhouse delegations.
Best Hurdler
If NCR’s Jomar Udtohan is the prince of sprints, his teammate Jaime Mejia was the duke of hurdles. The UPIS stand-out did a sweep in 110m and 400m and also member of the NCRAA relay team.
Best Jumper
Alexis Soqueno of Western Visayas is on our top list of jumper for this years’ palaro as he erased the 12-year old high jump record of Paulo martinez by leaping 1.92m in a very long joust that it remained as the only event at night time during that tournament.
Most Promising Athlete
Karen Janario is our choice as the most promising athlete for this years’ Palaro. The 15-year old Janario was already a champion during 2013 Batang Pinoy games and was able to get medals in sprints and hurdles. As she enters fourth year high school, she will be the athlete to watch in 2015 Palaro which will take place either in Tagum City, Davao del Norte or Koronadal, South Cotabato.
Palaro Athletics Team of the Year
We unanimously vote Eastern Visayas as the team of the year as they managed to end its medal drought in athletics since 1948. Given their situation that Typhoon Yolanda devastated not only their training facilities but also the properties and lives of their colleagues, Eastern Visayas team dubbed as “Team Yolanda” managed to win the 4x400m relay girls and their athletes Leah Joan Creer, Karen Janario, and Melissa Escoton captured great finish in the events they joined in. The story of their team is worth of inspiration and hailing them as the best team is the best oviation we can offer.
Golden Double Record Break for NCR in Palaro Relays
May 10, 2014
SANTA CRUZ, LAGUNA- NCRAA Sprinters went to a back-to-back victory as they harvest both the 4x100m and 4x400m secondary boys and shattered the Palaro records in relays during the Athletics tournament at the 2014 Palarong Pambansa here at Laguna Sports Complex, Brgy. Bubukal Sta. Cruz, Laguna on 09-May.
Capital city runners lead by Palaro triple record breaker Jomar Udtohan, with Jaime Mejia, Nestly Tercero, Franklin Onukogu Jr., and Venz Pena took an early advantage in the first laps of the race and trounced their rivals from Cagayan Valley, Davao Region, SOCKSARGEN regions and clocked a spellbinding time of 43.1 seconds on 4x100m and 3:22.1 minutes in 4x400m . This is enough to erase the 4-year old record set by their predecessors in NCRAA on 2010 for 4x100m which formerly stands at 43.24 seconds while wiped off the 12-yr old record set by STRAA (2002) that stands at 3:22.1. Meanwhile their colleagues in the elementary distaff side, captured gold in 4x100m with a time of 52.3 which is headed by hurdles double gold medalist Ellah Therese Sirilan with comrades April Mae Allegrado, Romalyn Eulin, and Francesca Elaine Buena.
On the elementary boys, Bicol runners spiced up again as they also sweep the 4x100m and 4x400m clocking a time of 48.2 seconds and 3:52.4 minutes and SOCKSARGEN Region take home the 4x400m victory with a time of 4:18.5 minutues.

Palaro 2014 Athletics Tournament Analysis: The Need for Fully Automated Timing System Continues
After six days of competition last week during 2014 Palarong Pambansa at the Laguna Sports Complex, Brgy. Bubukal, Sta. Cruz, Laguna, we at Pinoyathletics had great time doing coverage in my home province. Its about time to assess the whole Athletics tournament proper. Take everything we said here as positive criticism.
The Venue: Laguna Sports Complex had nice improvements this year. Added bleachers near the start of 200m dash made audience watch on the other side of the stadium. Still I hope they can improve the facilities such as as provisions for large video walls. As I stayed mostly in the media center, I can see some birth pains on the first day. The internet connection and desktop computers are still being installed even the press people already arrived. Comparing with Palaro 2012 in Lingayen, Pangasinan, the media center is aleady 100 percent working on the first day of competition and we don’t have much problems with the internet connection. Complimentary items such as free coffee and snacks were started to be provided on the second day. I know that the working committees are working hard for their job and I can’t blame them if they cannot provide all the necessary things for press as they also rely on their superiors. Still it would be great to address this matters for next years’ Palaro host which is either Tagum City, Davao del Norte or Koronadal, South Cotabato to make sure that provisions in the media center is already in place a day before the start of the games.
If Palaro Athletics Tournament is Fully Automatic Timed, this lane judge work will be much easier and will provide better angles to shoot for phographers as there will be no photo bombings.
The Tournament:
As we always want, I hope DepEd or the Palaro host city will really invest in purchasing fully electronic timing system just like this one manufactured by SEIKO (http://www.seiko-sts.co.jp/e/) and (https://www.seiko-sts.co.jp/e/products/catalog/sports/sportstiming_e.pdf) Palaro is the the pinnacle of Athletics competition among basic education students in the country and organizers should raise the technology of the games because IAAF only honors fully electronic timing . It would be good if the tournament manager will use an Athletics tournament software like HyTek: (http://www.hy-tekltd.com/track-meet-management.html) and DirectAthletics (http://www.directathletics.com/) Meet Pro. So that results will be automatically encoded and easily printed thus sending it to media or posting at the bulletin boards will be faster. Results delivery time in Palaro Athletics should really improve every year because the faster the results, the better that sports writers can tell to their readers the results which leads to more people reading and following the sport. Fully electronic timing also eases the burden of the technical working committee as they can get the results accurately and not subject to running around the track to check the race bibs and athlete numbers as the electronic timing system already doing that job.
